The first Romanian railroad was built in 1854, and the national railroad agency (CFR) was founded in 1880. Since then and until 1990, there have been only six major accidents. Following 1990, there have been no less than 20 major accidents, most of them caused by either theft of infrastructure, mistakes in directing traffic, unrepaired and ignored infrastructure weak points or the utter lack of modern technology. All these reason lead to horrible management, ignorance, incompetence and in some cases even mal intent. In order for these tragedies never to repeat themselves, the infrastructure needs to be modernized and brought up to date. Also, the personnel training needs to be done professionally and seriously, to insure that the personnel is up to the task and is ready for any problem that might occur. Until these issues will be solved, all we can do is hope that these kind of railroad accidents will just stop happening.
