Yet, there are major differences between West and East: while in some Western countries rail freight traffic has increased, in the former communist countries, including Romania, they recorded decreases.
Still, railways run great opportunities to once again become the main means of land transport in Europe, thanks to favorable circumstances. Rail gradually regains its role, particularly in countries of Western Europe, adapting to the requirements of the modern economy. This adaptation consists in reducing the duration of transport, implementation of the “door-to-door” transport system (in collaboration with road operators) and by offering lower prices. Of course, such measures to substantially increase the competitiveness of rail transport have been possible only after massive investment in rail infrastructure, which allows a 180-350 km / h speed, and after stations’ and rail logistics centers modernization.
