From an analysis of the U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council organization (NRDC), based on recent events in North American oil markets, it appears that if Europe does not act, about 5.3% to 6.7% of crude oil and fuel used in transportation will be by 2020, from the exploitation of oil from tar sands in Canada.
This type of unconventional fossil fuel is one of the most pollutants in the world. Resulting emissions increase would mean the release of six million cars on Europe’s roads!
The more dense the oil, the more energy required for extraction, transport and refining, resulting in increased emissions throughout its lifetime.
