We want to better understand how serious the consequences of the economic downturn on road transport undertakings are. At the same time it is clear that short term measures should not be taken at the expense of market integration and the objective of a sustainable transport system. The crisis must be used as an opportunity to modernise the transport sector,“ said Antonio Tajani, the European Commissioner for Transport.
International Road Transport Union (IRU) replied that competent authorities should urgently act in order to avert a deepening of the crisis in the road transport sector. The Union drafted a recovery strategy covering six points, called the ”6 R’s strategy“, calling authorities to reduce costs, restore credit, revise insolvency rules, reject neo-protectionism, retain workers and reinvest in road.
