Transporters obtained fuel excise exemptions, some infrastructure works are finally starting on the Danube, and ports cut taxes to attract more cargo. Road hauliers however are getting nothing but the same poor roads under the wheels, countless fines and impoverishing but badly managed taxes. It came as no surprise that they felt robbed by the state and were more than unhappy about the new budget saving action, namely the lump tax.
Analyzing this tax in a cynical manner, one can say that it has a good side, since it would force some of the players out of the market. Fewer companies would lower transport capacity and should drive tariffs back to sustainable levels. Although differently put, this is one of the demands voiced during the road haulier’s protests last year: limiting transport capacity on an overcrowded market.
Of course, smaller transport companies would be hit harder by the lump tax, but nothing stops the ones who have healthy businesses to avoid damage, even if it goes to the extreme action of fiscal emigration.
