The event was presided by Antonio Tajani, European commissioner for Transport, and was aimed at kicking off the preparation of the 2010 White Paper on the Future of Transport Policy. The key message of the conference was that the policy makers will try to strengthen the global leadership of the European model of transport, even after a very probable end of the era of an era of cheap, subsidised travel and publicly funded infrastructure. According to a focus group report presented at the conference, in the following four decades demand for mobility would grow, but increased ageing and dependency rate would reduce public resources for investments and maintenance of infrastructure. Accordingly, the transport sector might be obliged to become increasingly more self-financed through the ”userpays“ and ”polluter pays“ principles.
