Although the original purpose seems to have been reached, it was obvious that hauliers are still divided. Even more, only promises were obtained from the authorities. What value can have the same words heard so often? Since the ministry representatives have signed a paper that recognizes the existence of several problems and made a commitment to deal with them, these new promises have more weight: postponing solutions would void the agreement, and would trigger serious protests.
In other words, authorities can no longer blame elections, Government changes and other thin excuses to ”forget“ the commitments they made. The three hauliers’ associations which signed the agreement deserve congratulations, especially since they seemed to get out in an elegant manner from a not very pleasant situation, considering that getting support for the protest rally proved not to be a task too easy. Perhaps this lack of support is the reason which explains why only promises were made, without immediate solutions.
These effects and their causes should motivate those sick of promises, which opt to watch from the sidelines a battle of attrition fought by only a few hauliers. If not for else, then at least for the simple fact that any solutions promised now will come too late for hundreds of bankrupt hauliers, which had requested in previous years solving the same problems. Tomorrow, those who today chose to stay on the sidelines could be forced to close their businesses and suffer the same fate as many others before who stayed on the sidelines and complained but did nothing.
