Confronted with a decrease of budget due to the well known crisys, a lot of local authorities chose to turn of street lighting on some roads. This solution can affect wider areas, which are pitch dark by night. What the authorities forgot to think about, leaving aside public safety, is that street lighting actually is not that expensive. The general opinion that street lighting is expensive, is false. Through numerous studies and calculations it’s been proved that street lighting is more than affordable and that any sum invested in the power infrastructure is swiftly recovered. The environment issues such as conserving energy, does not hold water also, as the energy needed for street lighting is a very small percentage of the general power usage, not nearly enough to make a difference. In some countries, the electricity costs are indeed huge and this is because those countries have old power grids which are outdated and cannot be efficient and reliable anymore. The only solution for this problem is to invest in a modern infrastructure with efficient lighting systems. The new system would imply a bigger gap between light poles, thus decreasing the number of lights, while increasing their efficiency. This would lead to saving finances, due to more reliable infrastructure, cutting the costs down by up to 50%.
