According to the Association of Automobile Manufacturers of Europe, in July this year, 1,025,290 new cars were registered in Europe. Of these, 139,657 units were fully electric cars (BEVs), down 5.9% compared to the same month in 2023.
An even greater decrease than that of electric cars is observed in the area of hybrids (PHEVs). The 72,723 units registered in July correspond to a decline of 10.6% compared to the seventh month of 2023.
In contrast, the full hybrid (HEV) car segment increased in July by 24.4% to 333,655 units. Decreases were also recorded in the segments of cars powered by gasoline (-8.4%) or diesel (-11.3%). In this context, it can be said that the small increase in the automotive market in July 2024 was only supported by higher sales of HEV vehicles.
The first-seven month registration report shows that the European new car market increased by 3.9% to 7,906,191 units. In this case, contrary to the perception of some, the registrations of fully electric cars continue to grow, admittedly, at a very low pace which, towards the end of the year, may turn into a decrease.
Thus, between January and July 2024, Europeans registered 1,093,808 fully electric cars, 0.6% above the 1,087,118 units that entered circulation in the same period last year.

Also growing, much more accelerated, is the segment of hybrids without charging at the outlet (HEV). In the first seven months, 2,392,884 such cars were registered across the continent.
The number of petrol-powered cars, including mild-hybrids, fell by 2.4% to 2,764,606 units, and that of diesel cars by 8.4% to just 888,810 units.
The strongest European groups this year remained:
- Volkswagen (2,042,583 units),
- Stellantis (1,298,102 units),
- Renault, including Dacia, (743,488 units),
- Hyundai (671,930 units) and
- Toyota (520,531 units).
