The oil group Shell must not drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It was decided on Tuesday at the Court of Appeal in The Hague. This overturned a previous decision in 2021 in favor of environmental organizations.
According to the initial decision, Shell was obliged to reduce its carbon emissions by 45% by 2030. This includes those caused by the use of its products.
But Shell appealed this decision. The company argued that the Paris Agreement does not impose any obligation on companies to reduce polluting emissions. The company said it was up to governments, not courts, to enforce such actions.
Shell must not drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions
„It is not possible to determine what percentage Shell must respect. Some sectors face greater difficulties than others in becoming sustainable.,” say the judges of the Court of Appeal in The Hague.
The decision of the Court of Appeal can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
The 2015 Paris agreements require countries to significantly reduce their carbon emissions to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. It encourages going down to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
