The number of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide continues to grow rapidly, according to the latest figures from Germany’s Centre for Solar and Hydrogen Research (ZSW), reports DPA.

At the end of last year there were about 42 million electric cars on the road, about 50 per cent more than in 2022. The figure includes all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and range extender electric cars.

Number of electric vehicles worldwide has reached 42 million

According to the ZSW, 23.4 million electric cars were in China, more than half of the world’s stock. Close behind were:

  • United States with 4.8 million,
  • Germany with 2.3 million,
  • France with 1.6 million
  • UK with 1.5 million.

In the longer term, China’s dominance is unlikely to change, with growth this year at 60%, much stronger than in other countries.

If Germany is to meet its electromobility targets, the market needs to be stimulated, said Andreas Püttner of ZSW. „The German government’s initiative to increase the promotion of electric cars is just a first step,” he explained. He suggested abolishing subsidies for petrol and diesel vehicles.

Last year, the biggest producers of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were China’s BYD (with more than three million), Tesla (1.8 million) and Germany’s VW Group (one million).

In sixth place is BMW (about 570,000 units) and in tenth Mercedes (about 400,000 EVs).
