India, a country equipped with nuclear weapons, has announced the first successful hypersonic missile test.
„India has reached an important milestone. It has passed the test of a long-range hypersonic missile,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said in a statement.
The US, Russia, China and North Korea have tested hypersonic missiles. Many other countries are in the process of developing this technology.
India’s announcement comes just days after China, India’s neighbor and rival, showcased its growing air capabilities at an air show, showcasing the J-35A „stealth” fighter jet and attack drones.
The Indian hypersonic missile lifted off from Abdul Kalam Island off the east coast on Saturday.
Images released by the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) showed a missile exploding in the night sky.
„This is a historic moment. This important achievement has placed our country in the group of nations that have critical and advanced military technologies,” the defense minister said.
New Delhi has strengthened its defense cooperation with Western countries in recent years, especially within the QUAD, an alliance that also includes the United States, Japan and Australia.
India is also buying Russian military equipment, especially S-400 missile defense systems. This fact despite the threat of U.S. sanctions over the multibillion-dollar deal.
