German state LNG terminal operator Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET) has announced the completion of the operational structure of its floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) for the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal located in northern Germany, writes Enerdata.

Following the conclusion of a public tender procedure, the Lithuanian company KN Energies was contracted to handle the operation and technical maintenance of the floating terminal, starting in May 2024. The marine platform of the terminal is still under construction. It is located approximately 1.5 km off the coast of Wilhelmshaven. Commissioning is planned for the second half of 2024.

A new LNG terminal in Germany

The FSRU should have a capacity of about 4 billion cubic meters per year. The maximum regasification capacity is 5.1 billion cubic meters per year).

Currently, DET operates:

  • three other LNG import terminals based on floating units in Germany,
  • two operational (LNG terminal Wilhelmshaven 1, which houses the 170,000 cubic meter “Hoegh Esperanza”, and
  • LNG terminal Brunsbüttel, which is the 170,000 m3 Hoegh Gannet), and
  • the FSRU-based facility at Stade, which has yet to receive a load for commissioning.

Germany has JNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Lubmin, Brunsbüttel, as well as Mukran, which received its first FSRU vessel, “Energos Power”, in February 2024. In 2023, LNG terminals provided approximately 7% of Germany’s total gas imports .
