Tesla will not participate in this year’s Munich Motor Show in Germany, according to the event’s organizers, the Federation of German Automobile Manufacturers (VDA).

VDA said it did not comment on why Tesla decided to pull out of the flagship event in a month’s time.

Tesla will not participate in this year's German Auto Show

The U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker did not respond to requests for comment.

At the previous Munich Motor Show it attended two years ago, Tesla presented the new improved Model 3 for the first time in Germany. Compared to other automakers, Tesla’s exposure was relatively modest.

Tesla is affected by a decline in market share and popularity in Europe, especially in Germany. In the first seven months of this year, Tesla ranked only ninth in terms of new electric vehicle registrations, after once being the market leader.

The company always faces protests, with CEO Elon Musk’s political activities often in the foreground, including his support for Germany’s far-right ahead of this year’s election. In some cases, Tesla vehicles are set on fire.

It is unclear whether these developments are related to Tesla’s absence from the Munich Motor Show. The event in Germany is attended annually by car manufacturers, suppliers, technology companies and politicians. Last month, organizers reported higher bookings and strong international participation at the Munich event, including companies from China.
