„After 7 years of operation in extreme conditions in Sweden, the first two Transmontana locomotives delivered by Softronic to Green Cargo return  to Craiova, for  RR repair, after having traveled together over 2.900.000 km

„A new chapter for two locomotives that made history. And for us, another proof that the support offered to customers does not stop at delivery”

Transmontana – Romanian performance in northern Europe

The Transmontana models delivered in 2018 to Green Cargo have been adapted to the specific requirements of the Swedish rail network, including compatible signalling and safety systems, as well as technical characteristics optimised for low temperature, heavy snow and heavy freight traffic conditions. With a power of 6,000 kW, superior grip thanks to the Co’Co’ system, and high energy efficiency, Transmontana quickly proved to be a reliable solution for Green Cargo in the operation of heavy freight trains.

Since delivery, the two locomotives have travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres in commercial operation, contributing to Green Cargo’s goal of developing sustainable and energy-efficient rail transport. Now, after a complete cycle of use, they are brought back to the place where they were produced, for a complete overhaul, which will prepare them for a new operating cycle.

What does the general repair of a Transmontana locomotive involve?

Maintenance is a complex process, carried out at intervals of approximately 6-8 years, depending on the regime of use, and involves checking and reconditioning all essential components. In the case of the two locomotives returned from Sweden, the interventions will include:

  • Complete overhaul of the electrical and traction system, including testing of the converters, control system and electric braking system
  • Repair and recalibration of bogies, to ensure maximum stability and safety in operation
  • Replacement of axles with new ones, in accordance with international safety standards
  • Replacement of worn parts, modernization of components and update of control software
  • Verification of casing, insulation and structural integrity

„All these works are carried out within the maintenance division within Softronic, where the technical teams have the experience and the necessary equipment to bring the locomotives back to optimal performance parameters,” explain the company’s representatives from Craiova.

Founded in 1999, Softronic is the only manufacturer of electric locomotives and trains in Romania. In 2024, it achieved a turnover of 206 million lei and a net profit of 14 million lei, with about 500 employees, according to data from the Ministry of Public Finance. Softronic also produces the Hyperion electric train, which runs on routes such as Craiova – Bucharest – Brasov and Craiova – Bucharest – Constanta
